In addition to her five Oscar nominations, Close has received Tony Awards for her dramatic performances in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing (1984) and Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden (1992) and for her over-the-top portrayal of faded silent screen star Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Sunset Boulevard (1995). Close achieved diva status while reincarnating this larger-than-life tragic character so memorably created by Gloria Swanson in Billy Wilder's classic 1950 film. Close also received Emmy nominations for the TV movies Something About Amelia (1984) and Sarah, Plain and Tall (1991). |
