Her role as Dustin Hoffman's troubled wife in Kramer vs. Kramer garnered her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and in 1982, she won the Best Actress Oscar for the title role in Sophie's Choice.
After graduating from Vassar, Streep attended the renowned Yale Drama School, appearing in six of the seven plays presented annually by the Yale Repertory Company and earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1975.
Streep's remarkable versatility was on display early in her career when she played two totally different characters on the same night at the Phoenix Theater in New York. She appeared as a sleek secretary in Arthur Miller's A Memory of Two Mondays while simultaneously starring as a slovenly floozy in Tennessee Williams' 27 Wagons Full of Cotton. Streep won the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Theater World Award and a Tony nomination for this virtuoso achievement.
Streep began her feature-film career with Julia in 1977, followed by a starring role opposite Robert DeNiro in The Deer Hunter for which she was nominated for her first Oscar. Her numerous film credits include Manhattan, The Seduction of Joe Tynan, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Silkwood, Out of Africa, Heartburn, and A Cry in the Dark for which she won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
